Direct-die installation
This is a water cooler for direct-die installation: the cold plate is mounted directly onto the CPU chip, with no heat spreader in between. To do this, the CPU must be delidded and the motherboard's Integrated Loading Mechanism (ILM) must be removed. Thermal Grizzly's Intel 1851 Delid-Die-Mate is the tool for the delid. The cooler replaces both ILM and heat spreader, because it also works as a contact frame that sets the mounting pressure on the processor. It is hand-tightened with the included angle wrench, and a plastic coating on its contact surface insulates it. If the chip keeps its heatspreader, the block to use is the Mycro Pro RGB for LGA1851.
Nickel-plated microfin cooler
The microfin cooler is made of nickel-plated copper. The cooler's surface features a jet system, and the slot width of the cooling channels has been optimized: narrower over the thermal hotspot, slightly larger over cooler chip areas. The nickel coating on the cooler plate acts as a barrier to prevent gallium-based liquid metal from diffusing into the copper, making multiple applications of liquid metal such as Conductonaut Extreme generally unnecessary.
Acrylic, aluminum lid and RGB lighting
The cover is made of acrylic and aluminum: between the cold plate and the anodized aluminum lid is a layer of acrylic. After milling it undergoes a tempering process (the data sheet calls it annealing) to relieve internal stress. This ensures that stress cracks do not form in the material over time, unlike tempered acrylic. RGB LEDs are located under the lid and are controllable via a 3-pin ARGB header (+5V/DATA/GND) on the motherboard. These LEDs illuminate the acrylic and the G1/4-inch fittings on the lid, and the RGB cable can stay unplugged if lighting is not wanted. With two ports, the cooler takes two compression fittings, such as the DeltaMate 16/10. Color: black and silver.
Compatibility notice
The cooler is only compatible with Intel CPU's that use the LGA 1851 socket. Thermal Grizzly's CPU compatibility list, available online, names the Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K and 265KF, and Core Ultra 5 245K and 245KF. It treats processors not listed as incompatible.
KryoSheet usage note
Thermal Grizzly has extensively tested the cooler internally in various scenarios. During development, the focus was placed on ensuring stable operation of the processor and memory. It is mounted in such a way that its outer edges do not rest on the motherboard. In its test series, KryoSheet combined with the cooler did not provide significant improvements in temperature and posed issues with contact pressure. Therefore, we do not recommend thermal pads, as their additional thickness significantly affects contact pressure, which can impact performance.
The internal contour of the cooler is optimized for liquid metal, which can be applied in a very thin layer, and a thin layer of TG Shield should be used to insulate electronic components. Kapton Insulation Sheets are a risk here: if the cooler rests on the sheet, the height difference may become too large for the CPU die to make contact. Thermal sheets such as Carbonaut between die and cooler may put excessive mounting pressure on the CPU, which can cause incorrect memory detection or memory instability.
Attention: delidding and warranty
This cooler is only for delidded CPUs, and a caution comes with that: the warranty is void. Removing the heatspreader ("delidding") of a processor is at your own risk! Once the CPU is delidded the manufacturer's warranty expires, and damage caused by delidding is not covered by it. Taking the ILM off the mainboard may also invalidate the manufacturer's warranty of the mainboard manufacturer.
General notes on water-cooling products
- Do NOT use the cooler in combination with aluminum-based water-cooling components in which the coolant comes into contact with aluminum, such as radiators with aluminum tubes.
- We recommend suitable coolants that contain biocides and corrosion inhibitors and are free of particles that could restrict water flow or clog the loop.
- Before filling, the custom loop should be leak-tested with an air pressure tester (maximum 0.5 bar) for at least 1 hour. Our leak tester is here.
- After filling, the system should be checked regularly during the first 24 hours for possible coolant leaks.
- According to Thermal Grizzly's specification, the operating pressure must not exceed 0.6 bar. When using components from other manufacturers, ensure that their maximum operating pressure ratings are compatible with the system.
