How it is built

The features start with the construction, which combines four primary components: an Ultra-High-Performance nickel-plated copper cold plate, a solid nickel-plated brass housing, a Schott BOROFLOAT® borosilicate glass viewing window, and an anodized aluminum exterior cover. Thermal Grizzly calls it a premium water block, engineered around high-performance custom liquid cooling systems. Inside, high-quality EPDM O-rings provide the seals at every internal connection. The rubber is durable and elastic, so each O-ring can offer excellent resistance to coolant, heat, aging, and long-term use. The block holds 26.5 ml of coolant.

Ultra-High-Performance cold plate

Thermal Grizzly mills the cold plates of its CPU and GPU coolers with minimal slot and fin widths. At the heart of the DeltaMate is a hybrid microfin structure specifically optimized around AMD's chiplet layout. Directly above the CPU's CCDs (the CCD area) sit 25 extremely fine cooling fins, which feature 0.2mm fin widths with 0.2mm channels. Such a dense run of ultra-fine microfins creates a large heat-transfer surface where cooling performance is most critical, so the coolant can carry heat away quickly. The 29 larger 0.4mm fins in the upper area, above the I/O die, optimize coolant distribution through the block.

In Thermal Grizzly's in-house test, the block held a Ryzen 9900X at an average of 75.5 °C under full load. The chip was fixed at 5.3 GHz and 1.3 Vcore, about 230 watts, with a flow rate of 2.5 l/min on a Watercool MO-RA3 radiator. That is almost twice the 120 watts AMD gives for an unmodified 9900X.

Ports and fittings

The brass housing is a robust foundation for the coolant connections, and its brass threaded inserts take standard custom water cooling fittings. The two standard G1/4" ports, inlet and outlet, are positioned toward the upper-right portion of the block. Placing them there leaves the central area open, keeping an unobstructed view through the glass window. The inlet and outlet threads are 6mm-deep, each G1/4" thread providing a durable threaded connection. With two ports the block takes two compression fittings, such as the DeltaMate 16/10.

Glass window and aRGB lighting

For the viewing window the block uses genuine Schott BOROFLOAT® glass instead of conventional acrylic. This glass is highly scratch resistant and UV resistant, and less susceptible to alcohol-based cleaners than acrylic. The edges are cut by waterjet and hand-finished, and they interact with the integrated lighting to create a distinctive appearance. The addressable RGB LEDs that illuminate the water block connect to a standard 3-pin +5V/DATA/GND aRGB header for motherboard-controlled illumination.

A magnetic cover is included and can be installed over the block to conceal the screws and mounting hardware. This provides two visual configuration options, allowing the finished system to be configured either way: an exposed mechanical appearance, or a cleaner, streamlined presentation.

Fit and mounting

The block is also compatible with the Thermal Grizzly AM5 High Performance Heatspreader. Thermal Grizzly describes that as making it suitable for performance-focused AMD systems where premium materials, optimized heat transfer, and high-end construction are priorities, and as designed for high-performance custom PC water cooling. To mount it, remove the board's four cooler retention bracket screws and the brackets, then install the four standoff screws into the board's backplate. Apply thermal paste, set the block on the screws, add the springs and tighten the knurled nuts evenly in a cross pattern with the 2.5mm Allen key. The manual gives a tightening torque of up to 0.15 Nm. Thermal Grizzly's other AM5 block we stock is the Mycro Pro RGB.

Important water cooling notes

  • Do not combine the block with aluminum water cooling components where aluminum comes into direct contact with the coolant, such as radiators with aluminum tubes.
  • Fill with an appropriate coolant containing biocides and corrosion inhibitors. Particle-containing coolants are not recommended, since they may restrict or clog the cooling loop.
  • Before filling, leak-test the completed loop for at least one hour using an air pressure tester, at a maximum of 0.5 bar. We stock a leak tester here.
  • After filling, check the system regularly for leaks during the first 24 hours.
  • The maximum specified operating pressure is 0.6 bar.
