Alphacool Eisblock XPX 1U (12961)

The Alphacool Eisblock XPX 1U is a CPU water block for 1U server racks, for AMD AM3, AM3+, AM4 and AM5 and for Intel LGA 1150, 1151, 1200, 1700, 1851, 2011, 2011-3 and 2066. Five of its seven G1/4 connections are on the side, so the tubes can leave sideways and the block with its fittings stays inside the height of a 1U server case.

Fit

Alphacool says mounting material for all mainstream sockets from AMD and Intel is included, and that the Eisblock is compatible with many sockets from Intel and AMD, as well as for all 1U cases. Its current compatibility list is the one in the Properties above, and the mounting steps in its manual are for LGA 2066, LGA 1700/1851, LGA 115x, LGA 1200 and AM4 / AM5. The manual shows one pair of brackets for those Intel sockets and one pair for AM4 / AM5, a backplate, and a set of four screws for each group.

Alphacool does not include the mounting materials for some Intel Xeon sockets and the AMD Threadripper. For these oversized processors it recommends its Eisblock XPX Pro series, which offers adapted mounting material and an enlarged cooling surface. We stock that as the Eisblock XPX Pro 1U.

On the Intel sockets that use it, the backplate is attached to the mainboard from behind. Then the mounting frame and the mounting screws, which can be pre-assembled separately, are attached directly on the CPU block, and block and frame are screwed to the backplate. The manual has you tighten the screws hand-tight only, without tools. It also notes that the rubber and screw caps it shows are not included with this block.

Connections on top and on the side

Where should the tubes go? Do you want them to run like on standard CPU coolers? Or would you rather have them run sideways, away from the cooler, for a flat design? No problem: both are possible, and Alphacool's claim for the new XPX 1U Eisblock is the possibility of laying tubes in almost any direction.

Thanks to its extremely flat design, Alphacool says, the block fits into any 1U server case. In a 1U server rack no inlets or outlets can be used on top of the cooler, because the total height including the fittings would no longer fit. Therefore the block has further connection possibilities on its side. Alphacool calls it the Enterprise Solutions version of its well-known Eisblock XPX CPU water cooler, specially optimized for the very tight 1U server racks.

Cooling surface

The cooler base is made of nickel-plated copper. Its base plate offers 81 cooling fins covering an area of 34 x 32 mm, and the fins are only 0.2 mm thick. Alphacool says this allows for the largest possible area for heat dissipation through the water. The large cooling surface ensures that the cooling can reach any CPU core, which also benefits larger server CPUs.

Alphacool's claims are maximum cooling capacity and that many independent media have called the Eisblock XPX the most powerful CPU water cooler. It applies that to this block as well, as it contains the same technology. The only slight change is to the patented ramp system for the waterflow, which has been adapted to allow the new lateral connections.

What the loop needs

The block has seven G1/4 threads: 3 x IN and 4 x OUT, with 2 x IN and 3 x OUT mounted on the side. One IN and one OUT take the compression fittings for your tube size, which are not in the box. According to the manual, all IN and OUT can be combined with each other. Its accessories page lists five G1/4 screw plugs and a tool for this block, to close the connections you leave unused.

Straight fittings up to a size of 13/10 mm can be connected at the side, and Alphacool calls its TPV connectors, developed for the Enterprise Solutions series, ideal there. Larger fittings can be used at the side only in specific circumstances, with angled adapters. On top, all connections up to a size of 16 mm outside diameter can be used, no matter whether for soft tube or HardTubes. The manual puts the limit for a connection at a diameter of 18 mm. There is no lighting to connect. To run, the block needs a pump and a radiator in the same loop.
