Details
A D5 pump motor with five-step speed control by potentiometer, 65 x 65 x 57 mm, sold without a pump top. The Watercool WCP D5-VARIO Pump runs on 12V DC, pushes up to 1500 l/h and needs a separately available D5 top or reservoir before it can work.

One moving part
The WCP D5 is a DC pump using the spherical motor design as Laing developed it. In a spherical motor pump the rotor/impeller is one spherically shaped unit, and that unit is the only moving part. It is seated on an ultra-hard, wear-resistant ceramic ball.
A conventional pump has a shaft, shaft bearings and shaft seals; here they have been eliminated. Due to the principle involved, bearing clearance cannot develop, so the occurrence of the noise increase associated with it is not possible either. Consequently the pump continues to run quietly throughout its entire service life.
Self-adjusting, wet rotor bearing
The bearing adjusts itself and is lubricated directly by the medium being pumped, which is the wet rotor design. No separate maintenance is required, and all parts in contact with the medium are corrosion resistant. Because the coolant is the lubricant, the pump must never be operated without coolant: running it dry may damage it.
Under normal conditions the spherical design makes it impossible for the rotor to become locked. A reliable start is ensured even after long periods of shutdown, and the permanent magnetic mechanism allows a high efficiency output.
Speed regulation by potentiometer
This version has no PWM input: its rotational speed is set by a potentiometer in five settings, 1800, 2550, 3300, 4050 and 4800 rpm. A speed governor integrated into the stator means the rotation speed can be finely adjusted throughout a wide output range. Thus you may easily regulate the hydraulic performance, or limit the power consumption.
The pump always uses the same torque, independent of the rotational speed, ensuring reliable starting even on the lowest power level. Power supply is provided by a 4 pin Molex connector, and a 3 pin Molex plug offers rotational speed monitoring. On its back the pump carries a shiny plate made from stainless steel.
What the loop needs
The pump comes without attachment parts, and operation requires an appropriate pump cover. Watercool's own is the HEATKILLER® D5-TOP; a reservoir with a D5 bottom such as the HEATKILLER® Tube 100 D5 or the HEATKILLER Tank 200 D5 also takes it. Other covers are in our D5 pump tops category. The same pump with PWM control in place of the potentiometer is the WCP D5-PWM, and this VARIO also comes ready assembled with the D5-TOP as the WCP D5-VARIO with HEATKILLER® D5-TOP.

Notes
- Every mounting position is permitted except with the rotor facing downward: the rotor is not fixed to the axle and could shift and rub against the housing.
- Watercool does not recommend water additives with suspended particles; they can clog the pump or wear the bearing.
- Watercool recommends demineralized or deionized (distilled) water with a suitable corrosion inhibitor as coolant.
