Quick Overview

High-end expansion tank with a borosilicate glass tube 150mm long and a direct mount for Laing D5 pumps. Modularly expandable with many options and accessories.

Details

A tube reservoir with a direct mount for a D5 pump (Xylem, formerly Laing, or Lowara D5, sold separately), built around a 150 mm borosilicate glass tube that holds about 375 ml. The Watercool HEATKILLER Tube 150 D5 MP has a Multiport top (MP), a flow-optimized POM pump bottom and black anodized aluminum struts.

A modular series of glass tube reservoirs

Watercool builds the HEATKILLER® Tube series as a modular collection of high-quality expansion tanks, and each one has a glass tube made of borosilicate. Every part of a Tube can be exchanged on its own, so this D5 bottom could later be swapped for one that takes a DDC pump. Its many outstanding features are listed below.

Borosilicate glass tube

For Watercool, borosilicate is the best material currently available for the construction of an expansion tank, and it chose to rely on it. The glass offers high chemical and thermal resistance, low thermal expansion and a scratch-resistant quality. Watercool sees ideal conditions there for creating a high-quality tank.

Flow-optimized D5 version

You can purchase the Tube in flow-optimized versions for the popular D5 and DDC pumps from Xylem (formerly Laing), and this one is for the D5. In place of the standard bottom piece sits a solid acetal (POM) cover that you place directly on the pump. The pump sucks the water straight out of the expansion tank, with no extra parts. Watercool says the flow-optimized design ensures higher flow rates and less noise.

Watercool has manufactured the Tube in different sizes and filling volumes, so you are flexible with the volume. Watercool says that gives you the opportunity to have it perfectly presented visually for all applications. The sizes 100, 150 and 200 mm cover everything from mini-ITX to huge big towers. The HEATKILLER Tube 150 MP is the standalone version of the same size, with no pump bottom.

Fitting the D5 pump

A bare D5 pump motor needs no preparation. On a LAING/LOWARA D5 that still has its original cover, remove that cover first: turning the large ring to the left releases the pump motor. On the reservoir, unscrew the M4x12 screws on the bottom to detach the D5 lock ring. Turn the empty reservoir upside down and put the O-ring in place. Guide the pump cable through the lock ring before you attach the pump, then tighten the M4x12 screws evenly and crosswise. Do not squeeze or otherwise damage the cable.

Anti-cyclone effect

With power pumps such as the D5 or DDC especially, a so-called cyclone effect can occur where the cooling medium is sucked in. The pump creates a kind of whirlpool, a vortex in the suction area, and pulls in air. This results not only in less cooling performance but also in air bubbles and ambient noise. Watercool says its newly developed stainless steel inlay has effectively switched off the cyclone effect.

Large filling mouth

A quarter turn counter clockwise opens the bayonet catch lid without tools, and the large filling mouth makes refilling easy.

Elegant accessories, variable brackets and lighting

So that you can best integrate the Tube into a high-end system, Watercool has worked on an extensive accessory package (sold separately) that also includes different mounting options. Thanks to flexible mounting systems for horizontal or vertical mounting, you have the option of placing it standing, lying down or directly on fan locations.

The tank can be visually further enhanced with differently anodized struts: Watercool has blue, red and natural in its selection. Each set is made for one tube length, here 150 mm. Watercool calls the color “natural” perfect for anodizing the struts themselves in the appropriate color. In keeping with the current hype surrounding products with RGB LEDs, the accessories also include RGB and addressable RGB LED strips such as the High Luminous aRGB LED Stripe S. A strip runs through a small opening in the designated strut.

What the loop needs

No pump is in the box: choose a D5 from our D5 pumps, such as the Watercool WCP D5-PWM Pump. Fittings are not included either, so add two fittings to suit your tube size. We carry more of this length in our 150mm D5 tube reservoirs.

Made in Germany

Watercool says production is carried out with the greatest care on its ultra-modern CNC machine park in Waren-Müritz, Germany, where many work steps are done by hand. Each product is brought to perfection according to the four-eye principle, which Watercool calls Made in Germany as you would imagine it.

Notes

  • Check every seal before the first start-up. If the reservoir leaks, look at the O-rings for correct position and damage; a squeezed or damaged O-ring means the reservoir must not be used.
  • Drain the reservoir and take it out of the loop completely before any alteration. On the D5 version the pump has to come off first to reach the four screws of the bottom.
  • O-rings of two strengths (4 mm and 5 mm) seal the glass tube and compensate for its length tolerance. Use the same strength you found in the reservoir when you replace one; the O-ring spare set contains both.
