The black copper PVD top
This is Watercool's latest HEATKILLER IV in Black Copper PVD. Its top features a high-quality, black, diamond-like carbon coating (Diamond Like Carbon, DLC), applied using a modern plasma process. Watercool describes the surface as extremely hard and wear-resistant. It says the surface provides a stunning deep black appearance while offering optimal protection and long-lasting quality.
What changed in the HEATKILLER IV
Against the previous model, or predecessor, Watercool lists these points:
- Up to 3 °C better temperatures and cooling performance
- Increased flow rate thanks to a larger nozzle and collection channel (bigger jet plate nozzle and channel layout), resulting in fewer blockages and less clogging
- Tool-free Easy Mount system
- Extra large connectors and fittings thanks to 25 mm spacing
New cooling structure and optimized flow
The cooling structure, which Watercool also calls the cooling engine, underwent the most significant redesign. Watercool equipped the cooler with considerably finer, thinner fins to provide a larger surface area and thus better heat dissipation. It also ensured that the fins were designed in such a way that the flow was not compromised.
Compared to the previous model, Watercool eliminated the nozzle plate (jet plate) and integrated it directly into the lid. Watercool writes that this innovative design "allowed us to increase performance", improve flow and optimize reliability.
Easy-Mount (EasyMount), top quality workmanship
To make installation as easy as possible, Watercool developed the Easy-Mount system, which it calls revolutionary. This allows the cooler to be mounted or dismounted without tools at any time after initial installation. The mounting system is further enhanced by a fixed stop on the mounting bracket. This virtually eliminates the possibility of incorrect installation. Tighten the studs and knurled nuts evenly and crosswise: the contact pressure then follows the CPU maker's specifications.
But the design should also be befitting a Watercool product. Watercool says superior manufacturing techniques, combined with the finest materials, result in its Heatkiller IV cooler. To best showcase the opulent design, it listened to customers and included connection types up to 19 mm.
The block is manufactured with the utmost care in Watercool's CNC machine park in Waren-Müritz, Germany, which it calls state of the art. Many work steps are carried out by hand, and each product is finished according to the four-eyes principle: Made in Germany as you would expect.
What the loop and an LGA1700 build need
The two G1/4 connection threads take two fittings. For mounting on the LGA1700 socket Watercool writes "we strongly recommend using one of the available backplates", due to the socket's bending issues. They are the HEATKILLER IV Backplate INTEL 1700 (10014) or the HEATKILLER LGA1700 HEAVY Backplate (10016). On AM4 or AM5? Notes
- Watercool's manual has a page on the orientation of the block on the CPU; read it before you mount.
- A metal washer belongs between spring and mounting bracket on every socket, and a plastic washer between stud and mainboard.
