Important Information on Compatibility Checking!
Before purchasing, it should be verified whether the graphics card in use is compatible. The following steps can be carried out to do so:
- Check the compatibility list. It is designed based on a horizontal installation of the graphics card with the power cable routed toward the bottom of the case.
- Using the technical drawing, check whether the unit is compatible with the graphics card, the case (clearances to the side panel, etc.), and, if applicable, the CPU cooler.
The Noctua Edition is available in Normal (N) and Reversed (R) connector orientations. Depending on the orientation of the graphics card's power connector, the right one allows the 12V-2x6 cable to be routed neatly toward the bottom of the case. The on-screen display can be rotated by 180°, so the choice is about the cable, not the screen.
Monitoring
Thermal Grizzly developed the unit for precise, continuous monitoring of the power supply to high-performance graphics cards. It continuously monitors currents, voltages, temperatures and power consumption. In addition to total power consumption, the current in each individual 12-volt wire is measured separately, enabling a per-pin picture alongside the overall readings: the device measures the current load on each individual pin. This per-pin current measurement enables early detection of unusual load distribution, of irregularities in it, and of potential contact issues. Temperature monitoring takes place at the input and output of the 12V-2x6 connector, which is custom-designed, and two external 10 kΩ NTC temperature sensors are included.
If defined thresholds are exceeded, audible and visual warnings follow: an alarm is triggered and a warning appears on the display. Optional automatic system shutdown can also be configured via the included splitter cable. The preset threshold values can be adjusted through the configuration menu, so thresholds and alarms are individually adjustable. The underlying design is a patented development by Thermal Grizzly: the WireView Pro II is protected by European patent EP4250057.
Cooling
The Noctua Edition retains the full functionality of the standard device and combines it with a cooling system that has been specially adapted for it. Active cooling comes from a Noctua NF-A4x10 PWM fan that provides it in a semi-passive operating mode. At low loads the fan remains switched off, and it activates automatically depending on temperature and power consumption, which is what the semi-passive fan control is based on. The Noctua-optimized fan grille is specifically designed to match the fan, supporting efficient airflow with minimal noise. The CNC-machined aluminum housing is enlarged and also supports passive heat dissipation. Additional passive heat dissipation runs via a cooling plate which, combined with a thermal pad, improves heat transfer from the relevant components to the housing. Thermal Grizzly sums the solution up as high-performance, efficient cooling with particularly quiet operation.
Noctua conducted internal cooling tests under extreme conditions, in a test system without a case fan where the temperature inside the case was measured at over 40 °C. In those tests of Noctua's, the Noctua Edition was able to dissipate the heat generated by the device more effectively than the standard version, both passively and actively with fans running. Noctua also found active operation with spinning fans quieter, while the standard version was the louder of the two.
User-friendliness: cable routing and display
The unit also acts as a 90° adapter, which Thermal Grizzly lists as 90° cable routing for optimized cable management. The measured values go to the integrated TFT-IPS color display, which offers multiple views to display them:
- Main View: per-pin readings, power consumption, connector detection, fan control in percent and the output temperature
- Simple View: total power consumption, the highest-current pin, voltage and the hottest sensor
- Current Monitor: current per pin in amps, with a visual threshold indication
- Voltage Monitor: per-pin voltage plus the average value
- Power Monitor: per-pin power and total power
- Temperature Monitor: the readings from all four temperature sensors
The views are configurable, and Cycle Mode handles automatic view switching. The Noctua Edition features a specially adapted, Noctua-specific default display design with Noctua's signature brown design elements. That default design is replaceable: it can be replaced with other available designs, the preset options, or with designs customized using the software.
The device is fully functional without additional software, so standalone operation is possible, with plug-and-play usability without prior configuration. The optional WireView Pro II software can be used for device configuration, to adjust settings, and to analyze stored measurement data, among other functions. Reading and exporting that data is also done there. The USB-C port is for firmware updates, and a USB-C to USB 2.0 connection cable is included for internal PC integration.
Automatic data logging
Integrated memory handles the logging of relevant operating data: it logs at regular intervals. These logs include the measured currents in the individual 12-volt wires, total power consumption and the temperature near the 12V-2x6 output connector. Because the data is stored, it allows operating behavior to be analyzed retrospectively. It can be particularly useful for subsequent failure analysis, when investigating potential error events.
Extended warranty and clarity for the end user
The Noctua Edition also comes with the WireView Pro II's extended warranty covering the GPU connector. The period is two years (2 years) from the date of purchase. If damage should occur to the graphics card's 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 connector despite proper use and the integrated protective mechanisms, Thermal Grizzly will carry out repairs. If repair is not possible, it will provide an equivalent replacement. All of this is in accordance with the extended warranty terms and conditions, and the full terms and conditions are available in the documents linked below and in that PDF.
Installing it
Only install the unit when the PC system is switched off; the quick guide also recommends disconnecting the mains plug. The power cable of the power supply unit goes into the device, and the device goes into the power connector of the graphics card. The temperature sensors, the Y-splitter for the motherboard and the USB cable are optional connections. Check that every plug is fully inserted before switching on.
