Details
Thermal Grizzly's Ryzen 7000 Direct Die Frame V2 is a CPU mounting frame for mounting delidded AMD Ryzen 7000 and 7000X3D CPUs on socket AM5 without the integrated heatspreader. We also stock the original Ryzen 7000 Direct Die Frame, which is not compatible with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

What changed from the first frame
The V2 variant (DDFV2) was designed specifically for the AMD 7000 series X3D processors, but retains compatibility with non-X3D CPUs. The changes compared to the AMD Ryzen 7000 Direct Die Frame were made necessary after AMD subsequently added additional bonding points on the X3D CPUs. The result offers increased compatibility with AM5 CPUs, in particular the Ryzen 7000X3D processors. It is compatible with both the normal Ryzen 7000 processors and the X3D CPUs. These can be mounted with this direct die frame without the integrated heatspreader and without the Socket Actuation Mechanism (SAM), which the frame replaces.
What a direct die frame does
By omitting the heatspreader, the CPU cooler can be mounted directly onto the chiplets of the processor, which Thermal Grizzly describes as allowing for significantly lower temperatures. Its data sheet gives a direct die frame two functions. It fixes the CPU in the socket with a uniform contact pressure, which simplifies installation and primarily prevents instability in the RAM. It also reduces the risk of damage when the cooler is installed, because the exposed chiplets and other components on the Ryzen CPU are very sensitive to mechanical damage. The frame is anodized aluminum, enables mounting of delidded Ryzen CPUs, and Thermal Grizzly lists easy mounting among its properties.
Compatibility
Thermal Grizzly's compatibility list, verified by its internal tests, names the Ryzen 5 7600 and 7600X, the Ryzen 7 7700 and 7800X3D, and the Ryzen 9 7900, 7900X, 7900X3D, 7950X and 7950X3D. It should be noted that a processor not on the list is to be considered incompatible. Thermal Grizzly's product information carries a compatibility note, as of March 2025. The DDFV2 is NOT COMPATIBLE with the APUs of the Ryzen 8000G series as well as the CPUs of the Ryzen 9000 series, including the X3D variants.
The frame is only for delidded CPUs. Not delidded yet? The Ryzen 7000 Delid-Die-Mate is the tool for removing the heatspreader. Direct die cooling also changes the mounting height, so the cooler must be mounted lower, and the M3 and M4 adapter screws in the AM5 Adapter & Offset Mounting Kit make that possible. Thermal Grizzly asks that you follow all the instructions below, and we strongly advise the same.
Attention
- Delidding, meaning removing the heatspreader of a processor, is at your own risk.
- The manufacturer's warranty expires when the CPU is delidded, and damage caused by delidding the CPU is not covered by it.
- Removing the Socket Actuation Mechanism (SAM) of the mainboard, which this frame requires, may invalidate the warranty of the mainboard manufacturer.
