Details
Thermal Grizzly's AM5 Short Backplate is a shortened mounting plate for AM5 mainboards that replaces the original AM5 backplate, so that a CPU cooler with its own custom retention kit can be mounted. Need M4 threads in the backplate instead? The AM5 M4 Backplate is here.

Why AM5 needs it
Some CPU coolers that are compatible with the AM4 socket use a custom retention kit of their own for mounting. Since the AM4 backplate is primarily used for mounting coolers, omitting this backplate is generally not a problem on that socket. However, with the AM5 socket the Socket Actuation Mechanism (SAM) is also screwed on via the backplate, and so it cannot simply be omitted. In order to use an AM4-compatible cooler and its custom retention kit on AM5, you need an alternative holder for the mainboard's SAM.
What the plate does
This is where the plate comes into play. It serves as a mounting plate for the mainboard's SAM and, being shortened, leaves the holes for the retention frame screws free for cooler mounting. That extends the cooler compatibility of the board to a wide range of CPU coolers. To protect against short circuits, the anodized aluminum is additionally covered with an insulating layer of polycarbonate. The manufacturer lists increased compatibility with CPU coolers and easy mounting among its properties.
