Thermal Grizzly's AM5 M4 Backplate is an optional mounting plate for AM5 motherboards that replaces the original AM5 backplate and gives the CPU cooler M4 threads to screw into. If your cooler brings its own custom retention kit, the AM5 Short Backplate is the plate for that.

Why swap the backplate
Some CPU coolers use a mounting kit that comes with threaded screws in M4. These are not compatible with the UNC 6-32 thread used on the backplate that is pre-mounted on AM5 motherboards. With this plate fitted, appropriate CPU coolers can be used, especially AiO watercoolers; Thermal Grizzly's data sheet also names water and LN2 coolers. The manufacturer lists it as compatible with AM5 motherboards, with increased compatibility with CPU coolers and easy mounting.
Would you rather keep the stock backplate? The AM5 Adapter & Offset Mounting Kit has adapter screws from UNC 6-32 to M3 and M4 instead.
