One block in a series
In Aquacomputer's words, the cuplex kryos NEXT marks a new milestone in CPU water block development. It says every detail has been analyzed, optimized and tested to achieve perfection in cooling performance, in the installation procedure and in product features. In its view the result is more than a CPU water block with outstanding performance: it is a product series, with various models differing in color and functionality.
According to Aquacomputer, the VARIO models are the first CPU water blocks globally to incorporate a real-time adjustable base. It adds that it had never before been possible to adjust a CPU block's geometry to perfectly fit the CPU while the PC is in operation. This article is one of the models with the VISION module, which are equipped with modern electronics, and its base is fixed.
VARIO: adjustable geometry (VARIO variants only)
On the cuplex kryos NEXT VARIO variants, four adjusting screws on the sides of the water block change the geometry of the base part. Aquacomputer's reasoning is that each CPU is unique. Even slightest variations in height or shape of the metallic lids on top of current CPUs, it says, affect the cooling performance of a water block considerably.
Prior concepts for adjusting a block's geometry always required the water block to be disassembled and then reinstalled onto the motherboard, requiring significant time and effort. Aquacomputer says that with the VARIO the geometry is perfectly adjusted in just a few moments. You simply change it with the four adjusting screws while monitoring core temperatures at maximum CPU load. Temperature changes provide an immediate feedback, so the perfect setting is quickly identified.
VISION: integrated electronics
Inside the VISION variants sit a microcontroller board and an OLED display. A high resolution display, the integrated water temperature sensor and the USB interface are just three of the features. The features include:
- a water temperature sensor integrated in the water block
- a flow sensor connector, which can alternatively be used as an alarm output
- a USB interface
- an aquabus interface for communication with an aquaero 5 or 6
- customizable display output
- various hardware data that can be displayed from the aquasuite software, for example the current CPU load
Only the acrylic glass variants of the cuplex kryos NEXT with VISION are additionally equipped with an RGB LED, controlled depending on temperature or via USB. This block has a copper top and no LED.
Space inside the block is limited, so a maximum of two cables can be threaded into the water block. The following combinations are possible:
- USB and aquabus
- USB and flow sensor or alarm output
- aquabus and flow sensor or alarm output
Base part with micro structure
The base part carries an extremely fine micro structure whose structural width is lower than 200 µm. Coolant is injected centrally through a slot-shaped nozzle, then runs to both sides of the structure. Across the series the base itself is manufactured from copper, nickel plated copper or .925 sterling silver, depending on model; on this block it is .925 sterling silver.
Retention system
The retention system consists of stainless steel plates 2.5 mm thick, equipped with nickel plated spring cups. Springs and knurled screws secure the water block on the motherboard, and the installed retention system has a very clean look. All of its versions feature a mechanical stop for optimum clamping force and even force distribution. You can install the knurled screws by hand, and a hexagon socket wrench can additionally be used for easy installation.
There is no back plate in the box, because socket AM5/AM4 motherboards (like socket 2011 and TR4 boards) already include a back plate as part of the CPU socket. An additional back plate is therefore not required. Water blocks for socket 115x or AM3, on the other hand, include a steel back plate with silicone insulation to stabilize the CPU region of the motherboard.
Thermal compound
For optimum performance, Aquacomputer ships every cuplex kryos NEXT with what it calls outstanding thermal compound. A syringe with 0.5 grams of Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is included, complete with a plastic spatula. This compound has a high thermal conductivity. Due to its low viscosity it spreads out thin and evenly between CPU and water block, and the amount is sufficient for approximately five applications.
Color variants and material combination
The top part of the water block is available in various materials and coatings across the range:
- Acetal black: shiny black high-tech plastic
- Acrylic glass: a transparent body suitable for illumination
- Copper: reddish gloss
- Nickel plated brass: bright metallic gloss
- PVD plated brass: a high quality multi layer coating with a dark metallic gloss
This block is the copper/.925 silver material combination: the top part is copper and the base is .925 sterling silver.
Installation
Take off the old CPU cooler first and, if necessary, remove thermal grease residues from the CPU surface using benzine. Place a small drop of the supplied grease, about 4 mm (0.15 inch) in diameter, centrally on the CPU, or apply a thin layer with the plastic spatula.
Put the block on the CPU in the orientation shown in the manual. One spring goes into each recess, and a knurled screw goes through each spring into the anchor threads of the CPU socket, only one or two revolutions to start. Then tighten the four screws alternately, a fraction of a revolution each time, until all of them are fully fastened.
What the loop needs
The two connection threads are G1/4, so the block takes two fittings, for example from our fittings section. Feed the coolant through the central fitting for best cooling performance, because a reversed flow direction significantly decreases cooling performance. Aquacomputer requires Double Protect Ultra as coolant for corrosion inhibition.
What you need to connect it
The scope of delivery has no cables. A USB connection uses the internal USB connection cable for VISION (53215). To link the block to an aquaero 5 or 6, for example the aquaero 6 LT, use the aquabus cable for VISION (53214). Cables for the flow sensor and alarm output are in our VISION CPU accessories.
aquasuite software
When you activate this product you get the current aquasuite software version with an upgrade service for at least six (6) months. Once that service expires, you may still use and reinstall the latest version released during the upgrade period, with no time limit. The update service can optionally be extended or renewed at any time for a fee, and installation and activation require an internet connection.
