Two loops in one radiator
Aquacomputer says the airplex modularity system now makes it possible, for the first time, to operate two separate loops in one radiator. On radiators operated this way, the cooling surface (fin surface) is split at a ratio of approximately 70% for the primary and 30% for the respective secondary loop. That can allow extremely compact two-loop systems, e.g. separate cooling of the heat-sensitive HDDs, apart from the CPU and graphics card.
Both loops are completely separated from each other and sealed against each other. No coolant transfers from one loop to the other, so mixing of the coolant is completely impossible.
A fully modular radiator system
Aquacomputer calls the airplex modularity a fully modular radiator system for water cooling systems, built from exchangeable components. It says the series shows the competence and know-how of the 10 years of company history Aqua Computer had at the time; the company has been manufacturing water cooling systems since 2001. Aquacomputer also claims an extremely high cooling performance for it. Summarized, the most important features are modularity, compact size and systems with multiple loops in one radiator.
The radiator is very compact: shorter than most other radiators for the same fan size, and only 146 mm wide. The system is indefinitely expandable in all dimensions. Many colors for the side panel were offered (brushed stainless steel, black aluminum, blue, red); this one has stainless steel side panels.
How it is built
The system is based on a fin package (tube/fin element) with 21 copper tubes and pressed-on stainless steel flanges. Here the fins are copper, which Aquacomputer offers for maximum performance in compact dimensions. Delrin terminals, made from acetal, are integrated on both sides of the fin package. A gasket ring (o-ring seal) creates a safe seal between each terminal and its stainless steel flange, and the two are screwed together.
There is no solder residue, due to solder-free manufacturing, and since no welding is performed during production there are no welding residues either. The radiator is completely demountable, so it can be disassembled for thorough cleaning. The fins have no lacquer coating, for good thermal transfer.
No ignoble materials are in contact with the coolant, only copper and stainless steel. The pipes are copper, so the cooling liquid has no direct contact to aluminum. CC-manufactured components are made from Delrin and stainless steel. Aquacomputer says the highest precision on the individual components ensures easy mounting and a perfect fit. Riveted-in threads take the fan mounting screws.
Aquacomputer adds that the fin spacing is optimized for low fan speeds and gives excellent passive cooling performance. The flow is optimal too, through parallel tubing, with optimized flow resistance.
Connecting radiators
The Delrin terminals have integrated connection terminals, lowered from the surface, with a round spacing (recess) above each thread. A small connection adaptor can be pushed into that spacing to connect two radiator modules flatly and directly, without any tubing pieces. The orientation of the radiators to each other determines the flow direction of the coolant:
- When connected side by side, the radiators are connected serially, one after the other.
- Horizontally stacked, they create a parallel flow set-up.
Additionally, the system can also grow in length indefinitely: the fin packages are connected via optional Delrin connection modules. The interconnection plates are sold as a side-by-side set (33503) and a horizontally stacked set (33504).
Sizes and rebuilding
Radiators of all lengths use the same Delrin terminals. Only the side panels and fin packages are different, hence a radiator can be rebuilt and modified by buying the components. Every size has a width of 146 mm, so it fits perfectly into a standard 5.25" drive bay. In standard configuration, without the pump module, the height is 63.5 mm.
The length is 44 mm longer than the according fan dimensions. With 3x 120 mm fans that gives 360 + 44 mm = 404 mm. All connection threads are G1/4 in size, and all G1/4 fittings from our shop can be used with the system.
Pump modules in the range
Pump modules with reservoir are available for the series. Equipping the series with an optional pump module is how an extremely compact water cooling system that is easy to handle can be realized. On the offered radiators with pump module, the reservoir and pump are already integrated directly into the Delrin terminal. Depending on the type, it even features a USB fan controller with water temperature measuring, and optionally a flow meter and/or water filter.
Aquacomputer calls the Compact 600 pump module in the 12V version an especially interesting feature. It is equipped with the proven ceramic bearing from Aqua Computer and allows whisper-quiet operation, as well as many monitoring and control options by way of its integrated pump controller with USB interface. A flow sensor and filter are easily possible on it, and mounting them is done quickly and hassle-free.
What the loop needs
No mounting hardware is in the box; mounting options are in our radiator mounting hardware section, and the airplex modularity 360 mounting bracket (33513) is made for the 360 size. The radiator takes three 120 mm fans. Each port in use takes one G1/4 fitting from our fittings section. A fitting wider than the 19 mm recess needs a suitable extension. A large range of accessories is available: reservoirs, pump modules, feet, filter, sensors and more, such as the on-edge stands (33508).
