The Alphacool Eisbecher Aurora D5 Acetal/Glass - 150mm incl. Alphacool VPP Apex D5 is a 150mm glass tube reservoir with an integrated pump top for powerful D5 pumps, and it comes with a VPP Apex pump. It holds 180 ml and measures 142 x 77 x 77 mm. The same reservoir without a pump is the Eisbecher Aurora D5 150mm, and the taller one with pump is the 250mm with VPP Apex.

Glass and acetal

The tube of the reservoir is made of glass, the D5/VPP pump top and the lid of acetal. Alphacool says the combination of these two materials gives the expansion tank a magnificent appearance. In its words the wow effect is provided by the 12 digitally addressable RGB LEDs in the pump top and by the Lighttower water effect inside the glass tube.

Extensive Mounting Options

There are two basic ways of mounting, but these can be used in a versatile way. The reservoir has feet included, which Alphacool also calls stands, so that it can be mounted to the bottom of the case, for example. However, Alphacool also includes 120mm/140mm mounting frames. With these frames it can be mounted on any free 120 or 140 mm fan location. This also means you can mount it directly on to a radiator or on to the fans on a radiator.

The manual gives the screws for each way. The brackets go on the mounting frames with the four M4x12 screws. On a case panel, use four M4x8 screws in conjunction with the M4 nuts. On a radiator, use the four M3x5 screws. Depending on the radiator size the bracket must be rotated: the manual's examples are the 240-30 and 280-30 X-Flow, while the 120-30 and 140-30 X-Flow need no rotation.

Digital RGB Lighting

The aRGB LEDs illuminate the glass from below. They are located in a ring at the bottom of the tube, in the transition to the pump top, and are not visible from the outside. The illumination is particularly strong at the bottom and slowly decreases toward the top. In combination with the Lighttower water effect, Alphacool says a very special kind of illumination is achieved, especially by the reflections in the real glass. As with all Alphacool Digital RGB products, the lighting is connected via a 3-pin JST connector, and other such products can be connected directly via the Y-adapter. It is controlled by a digital RGB capable mainboard or a digital RGB controller such as the Alphacool Aurora Eiscontrol (Art. 15360).

Lighttower Water Effect

A special water effect is created in the Aurora Eisbecher via the riser tubes. If you do not fill the reservoir beyond the top edge of the riser tube, you will get a kind of fountain. In this case the water is pushed out the sides of the riser tube and splashed against the glass. Depending on the strength of the flow of the loop, the effect is stronger or weaker. There is one riser tube with this effect at the bottom inlet and one at the top inlet. The manual adds that the filter with the inlay must always sit on the top left, because only in this position is the water flow guaranteed.

Pump

The VPP Apex does without a spherical bearing and uses a ceramic shaft, and the motor's coils have been moved from the inside to the outside. According to Alphacool these changes have the effect that the pump is fundamentally more stable and smoother running. Any vibrations that arise have been significantly reduced, it says, and as another positive side effect the power consumption has been almost halved as a result. Compared to Alphacool's Eispumpe, the power is not supplied via a 4-pin Molex connector. Instead, the pump is connected to the power supply using a SATA connector. Its 4-pin fan connector connects to the motherboard or to an external controller. This allows you to control the speed range via PWM and read out the RPM signal.

What the loop needs

The pump is in the box, so the loop still needs fittings for the G1/4 ports, tube and coolant, plus a SATA plug from the power supply and a 4-pin PWM header. Of the five ports, every opening you do not need is closed with a screw plug, and three screw plugs are included. For refilling, the manual recommends only clear cooling liquids from Alphacool's own production (CKC, Tec Protect or Eiswasser Crystal, no UV) or pure distilled or osmosis filtered water.

Notes

• Note on application: please use the reservoir only in conjunction with clear, transparent water cooling fluids. Alphacool warns that the particles and additives in Pastel liquids can clog and permanently damage water cooling products such as radiators, pumps, coolers and hoses. This can result in voiding the manufacturer's warranty as well.
