Quick Overview

Thermal Grizzly Putty is an electrically non-conductive alternative to traditional thermal pads, specifically designed for GPU modifications and the replacement of thermal pads between the PCB and the cooler.

Details

Thermal Grizzly Putty Basic in the 100g container: a gap filler that takes the place of thermal pads on graphics cards. For a single card, the 30g container is here.

What it replaces

TG Putty is an alternative to conventional thermal pads that is electrically non-conductive. As an easy-to-apply, flexible gap filler it compensates for height differences, making it ideal as a replacement for the pads on GPUs. From the factory, graphics cards typically feature several types of thermal pads of varying thicknesses. During a replacement, or when converting the cooler to a GPU water cooler, that means requiring different pads for each of them. The putty can compensate for height differences ranging from 0.2 mm to 3.0 mm instead, and it conforms to the surface, so the quantity is adjustable. Thermal Grizzly developed it for modifying graphics cards and says it can also be used in notebooks, gaming consoles, handheld devices and audio products.

Three variants

The putty is available in three variants, primarily differing in their thermal conductivity. Putty Basic, this one, has medium thermal conductivity. Putty Advance has good thermal conductivity. Putty Pro has excellent thermal conductivity. Each one comes in 30g and 100g.

How much a card takes

Modifying a single, smaller graphics card without an active backplate (e.g., a GeForce GTX 1060) takes approximately one 30-gram container. For larger graphics cards, such as a GeForce RTX 4090, one container is generally sufficient for the memory (VRAM) and the voltage regulators (VRM) on the front side. On the backside of those cards there is often a uniform, larger gap between the PCB and the backplate. In this case approximately two 30-gram containers are needed, since that much is required to fill the gap completely. Those amounts are Thermal Grizzly's and are counted in 30-gram containers; this container holds 100g.

Applying it

Before application, clean the target surface: it should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased, for example using TG Cleaning Wipes or conventional isopropanol. The application itself is performed using the spatulas included in the scope of delivery, which also enable large-area application. The putty can be shaped by hand as well, into small balls sized to the target area (VRAM or SMD parts, for example), and Thermal Grizzly recommends gloves for that.

Notes

  • TG Putty is not suitable for use on processors (IHS or Direct Die), and it must not go directly on the GPU die.
