Quick Overview

The thermal pads of the Minus Pad High Compression series offer extremely high compressibility combined with excellent thermal conductivity. They are especially practical when converting a graphics card to a water cooler, as a single pad thickness can be used across various contact points.

Details

Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad HC (TG Minus Pad High Compression) thermal pads, 120 x 100 mm and 1 mm thick, two to a pack (2 pcs). They are for replacing the thermal pads of a GPU cooler or fitting a GPU water cooler. Need another thickness? The same sheet also comes in 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm.

One pad for varying heights

The pads of this series feature exceptionally high compressibility, which makes them especially versatile in practical use: a single pad can bridge varying height differences simultaneously. An HC Pad can be applied to different components within the same setup, such as VRAM, voltage regulators, and other contact surfaces. This is particularly useful when modifying graphics cards with a GPU water block, where one pad thickness can be used across the various contact points.

In general, High Compression pads are ideal in situations where the exact required thickness is unknown. In such cases, the existing pads are measured, then replaced with slightly thicker ones from this series. Thermal Grizzly calls it particularly noteworthy that these pads not only maintain their thermal conductivity under high compression. The conductivity can even increase with higher contact pressure.

  • Excellent thermal conductivity, which holds even under heavy compression
  • Adapts well to height tolerances
  • Easy to handle and highly versatile in application

How to select the appropriate thickness

An HC Pad should always be chosen slightly thicker than the measured height difference, and at least one step greater than the thickest pad that is factory-installed on the cooler. For example, if the stock thermal pad is measured at 2.4 mm, a 3 mm thick HC Pad should be used. At the same time, care must be taken not to use pads that are too thick. On a graphics card, for instance, it must be ensured that direct contact between the GPU chip and the corresponding cooler surface is maintained. As previously mentioned, it is important to verify that all critical components still maintain proper contact once the selected pad is in place. The rule based on all this: as thin as possible, but as thick as necessary.

Contact pressure and room to expand

Compressing the pads requires a corresponding amount of contact pressure. GPU coolers, whether standard air coolers or GPU water blocks, usually have a relatively high number of pressure points via screws in relation to the surface area. In their case that generally ensures sufficient pressure. Laptops, in contrast, often only use four screws to secure the chassis, meaning there is minimal contact pressure in the center due to the large area and few pressure points. Thicker HC Pads should therefore not be used in laptops.

It is worth a note that while the pads are highly compressible, they are still subject to physical limitations, and excessive contact pressure can damage components. Additionally, the pads will expand in the X and Y directions when force is applied on the Z-axis (height). Thermal Grizzly's internal testing has shown that varying height differences can be seamlessly compensated, as long as sufficient contact pressure is applied and there is enough space for the pads to expand.
