Quick Overview

The expansion tanks of the ULTITUBE series are equipped with a tube made of borosilicate glass, which, in contrast to the Plexiglas often used for tube expansion tanks, has a very high hardness and scratch resistance, a very low thermal expansion and excellent chemical and thermal resistance. The glass tube has an outer diameter of 65 mm and a wall thickness of 5 mm.  The Pro version of the ULTITUBE D5 come with a RGBpx-compatible LED ring with 13 individually addressable LEDs is included in the scope of delivery and can be used to effectively illuminate the expansion tank.

Details

The Aquacomputer ULTITUBE D5 150 PRO Reservoir with D5 NEXT Pump (34109) is a 350 ml tube reservoir with two G1/4 ports and an Aqua Computer D5 NEXT pump mounted directly into its base. The tube is borosilicate glass. The PRO version adds a pressure equalization membrane in the lid, an RGBpx LED ring with 13 addressable LEDs and a rubber fixation ring.

Borosilicate glass tube

Every expansion tank in the ULTITUBE series is equipped with a tube made of borosilicate glass. Acrylic glass (Plexiglas) is often used for tube expansion tanks instead. In contrast, borosilicate glass has a very high hardness and scratch resistance, very low thermal expansion and excellent chemical and thermal resistance. The tube measures 65 mm in outer diameter, with a wall thickness of 5 mm. Metal rings of black anodized aluminum are firmly bonded to both ends, which keeps them connected to the tube, and they do not come into contact with the coolant or any other cooling medium.

Base and lid are made of resistant acetal and are screwed to the glass tube. After unscrewing the lid, a large opening is available for filling. The number in the name (50/100/150/200 across the Ultitube series) refers to the glass tube length in millimeters, so this product is the 150 mm version.

PRO version: membrane, LED ring and fixation ring

The PRO version of the ULTITUBE D5 has a gas exchange membrane integrated directly into the cover, the lid of the reservoir. It lets gases pass, so pressure fluctuations caused by temperature changes are continuously compensated via the membrane: the internal pressure of the loop is equalized with the ambient pressure, without coolant being able to escape.

Also included in the scope of delivery is an RGBpx-compatible LED ring with 13 individually addressable LEDs to effectively illuminate the reservoir. It consists of a transparent silicone ring and a black rubber LED holder. Slide the silicone ring over the top of the reservoir to the position you want on the glass tube, then insert the holder. The LEDs can be connected directly to the D5 NEXT pump: the ring's connector marked IN goes to the pump's RGBpx output with the supplied cable. At the end of the strip there is a second connector, marked OUT, for connecting another RGBpx component in a daisy chain.

A rubber fixation ring with a stainless steel insert is in the box too. Slipped over the top of the reservoir onto the glass tube, it gives an additional, vibration-damped fastening in the upper area of the glass tube.

Filter and seals

Integrated at the bottom of the container sits a filter element of fine stainless steel wire mesh. In addition to functioning as a particle filter, it also separates air bubbles from the coolant. The element is held in a molded rubber part, and it can be rinsed out, for example under running tap water. The seal (gasket) in the upper area of the glass tube, below the lid, is a molded rubber part as well. It is designed for easy assembly and is therefore securely positioned in the right place when the lid is screwed on.

D5 NEXT pump

At a glance, the most important functions of the D5 NEXT start with its Laing D5 ceramic bearing ball motor, chosen by Aquacomputer for optimal smoothness and longevity (durability). Its removable control unit pulls straight off the motor for easy access to the electrical connections. Only take it off or put it back with no power supplied to the pump, and do not force it: it fits in one orientation only.

A high-resolution OLED display with integrated buttons allows direct operation even without a PC. Integrated RGBpx lighting in the pump gives lighting effects and error signaling, and an alarm buzzer adds acoustic alarm signaling. An integrated water temperature sensor reads the coolant. Control parameters can be set in many ways, which Aquacomputer calls versatile control options.

The PWM fan output delivers up to 25 watts of power with speed monitoring. Alternatively, that output can be used as a flow sensor input, for the high flow LT (53291) or high flow 2 (53292), but never for a fan and a flow sensor at once. Using the aquasuite software, eight additional measured values can be transferred from the PC to the D5 NEXT.

The RGBpx LED output drives up to 90 addressable LEDs, the LED ring included. That output can alternatively be configured as an aquabus interface for connection to an aquaero 5/6, such as the aquaero 6 LT; RGBpx and aquabus cannot be used at the same time. Power supply is via a SATA connector from the power supply unit. A USB 2.0 interface links the pump to the PC, and a firmware update runs via USB too.

Mounting and the pump

Fastening material for mounting on a side / rear wall, or for a standing mounting on the bottom of the case, is included in the scope of delivery. For decoupling, four soft rubber decouplers (rubber buffers) come with it. A standing installation is preferred for stability reasons, and the reservoir can stand directly on the D5 NEXT. Aquacomputer recommends additional stabilization with the D5 NEXT bracket (34111).

Turning the display means rotating the entire pump, which needs the mounting ring unscrewed. Drain the coolant completely first, and take the controller unit off the pump, or coolant can leak. Afterward, fasten the ring again by hand. If the reservoir goes in without the pump's mounting plate, a flat silicone insert can replace the mounting plate and silicone damper.

All D5 pumps offered by Aqua Computer fit this base, as do identically constructed pumps of other manufacturers. Aquacomputer says the reservoir was designed for optimum flow characteristics, reducing noise and vibration of the pump to a bare minimum. A slim threaded ring of black anodized aluminum holds the pump in place.

What the loop needs

Please note that the reservoir is supplied without connections: order suitable fittings separately. The two G1/4 ports take two of them, from our fittings section. The return line goes to the port engraved IN, the other line to the remaining port. Fill it with Double Protect Ultra or water.

The pump takes a SATA power plug from the PC's power supply. The internal USB connection cable goes to a USB 2.0 header on the motherboard; it is used for data exchange with the PC and is not required for pump operation. The same PRO reservoir without a pump is the ULTITUBE D5 150 PRO (34095).

aquasuite software

The aquasuite software gives easy setting, evaluation and visualization of all sensor data. System requirements are Windows 10 or newer and an internal USB 2.0 connection (port). By activating this product you will receive the current aquasuite version with an update service for at least eighteen (18) months. After it has expired, you can use the version last available in the update period without time limit, and reinstall it.

The update service can optionally be extended or renewed at any time, with costs. An internet connection is required to install and activate the aquasuite software. Further information on the update service and activation can be found on Aquacomputer's licensing pages.

Notes

  • Never use a coolant with solid micro particles: those in various opaque coolants damage the D5 pump bearing and may destroy the borosilicate glass tube.
  • The pump must not run dry.
  • Mounting options that use the silicone damper need the pump vertically above the damper and the reservoir firmly secured to the PC case. The damper is not designed to withstand lateral stress or transportation of the PC.
  • Turn the power supply off completely, or unplug the mains power cord, before connecting or disconnecting any cable.
  • Use light force only when screwing in fittings, so the threads in the plastic base part are not damaged.
  • To open the lid, hold the glass tube and turn the lid counter-clockwise, without tools and with moderate force only. Keep the gasket safe and place it on the glass tube before screwing the lid back on.
  • Clean with a dry, soft cloth, and keep all electronic components and headers away from coolant or water.
