Details
The Aquacomputer Dr. Delid Tool for Skylake, Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake Processors (51215) is a CPU delid tool for heat spreader removal and reinstallation on Intel Kaby Lake-S, Skylake-S and Coffee Lake-S processors. It does not fit Coffee Lake-R, Kaby Lake-X, Skylake-X, Skylake-W or Skylake-SP CPUs, or any CPU with a soldered heatspreader.
Properties
- For
- Intel Kaby Lake-S, Skylake-S, Coffee Lake-S
- Material
- Acetal base, stainless steel inserts
- Operation
- Hexagon socket screw, turned by hand with the supplied wrench
- Reinstallation
- Stainless steel alignment frame and pressure bracket
Why the heat spreader is rotated, not pushed
Dr. Delid can be used for delidding the processor as well as for precise reinstallation of the heat spreader after an exchange of the thermal interface material (thermally conductive paste). For removal, the tool turns the heat spreader against the CPU base. The force is distributed to all four sides of the CPU this way, as opposed to only one side when tools with a sliding mechanism are used. That prevents damage of the thin PCB, and the heat spreader is removed without a jolt or excessive force.
Heat spreader removal process
Aqua Computer's no. 1 priority in the design is the prevention of CPU damage, and each step of the process serves it:
- 1. The processor sits in an exact, CNC machined recess in the acetal base. Being relatively soft, the acetal material keeps excessive punctual pressure or scratching from damaging the CPU.
- 2. Before the actual removal starts, the CPU is locked in place, so the tool can be handled without risk of the CPU dropping out of it.
- 3. Removal is facilitated by rotating the hexagon socket screw by hand, using the supplied wrench, and a mechanical stop limits the rotation of the heat spreader in the tool.
- 4. The heat spreader stays secured in the tool during the process, so it can not hit the CPU die by accident.
- 5. Once the heat spreader is off, an aperture in the tool allows you to lift the CPU out without touching the gold contacts.
Reinstallation of the heat spreader
After cleaning the CPU and the application of new thermal grease, insert the CPU into the tool again for precise installation of the lid:
- 1. A stainless steel frame for heat spreader alignment is inserted into a recess in the tool. The heat spreader now drops into the frame, resulting in what Aquacomputer calls perfect alignment to the CPU. It can be installed with glue, for instance silicone or polyurethane.
- 2. A stainless steel bracket, supplied with the tool, can apply slight pressure to the center of the heat spreader until the glue is cured. Its knurled screw is made from polyamide, which prevents damage to the heat spreader.
What a delid needs
The CPU is not part of the scope of delivery. Fresh paste for the die is in our thermal compound section, and glue for the lid in thermal adhesive. Aquacomputer also makes the Dr. Delid PROFESSIONAL (51216) for the same CPUs.
In the box
- Tool with stainless steel inserts
- Hexagon socket wrench
The manual for Dr. Delid is a one-page picture guide to removing and refitting the heat spreader with the delid disc, centering tool and press tool.
