Quick Overview

Alphacool presents the latest generation of the Eisblock Aurora water cooler for Radeon RX 7XXX graphics cards.

Details

The Alphacool Eisblock Aurora RX 7900XTX Red Devil with Backplate is a GPU water block for two AMD graphics cards from PowerColor: the Radeon RX 7900 XTX Red Devil and the Red Devil Limited Edition. It cools the card with a chrome-plated copper cooler under an acrylic top, and the black aluminum backplate is in the box.

Compatibility

Alphacool lists these cards for this block:

  • PowerColor Radeon RX 7900 XTX Red Devil Limited Edition, 24GB GDDR6, HDMI, 3x DP (RX 7900 XTX 24G-E/OC/LIMITED)
  • PowerColor Radeon RX 7900 XTX Red Devil, 24GB GDDR6, HDMI, 3x DP (RX 7900 XTX 24G-E/OC)

The block was designed for one PCB layout, and card makers sometimes revise a board so that a cooler no longer fits later models. Before ordering, compare your card and its PCB number with the pictures in Alphacool's GPU configurator, or look it up in its compatibility list for AMD cards.

Technical highlights

In its product information Alphacool presents this block as the latest generation of the Eisblock Aurora water cooler, here for Radeon RX 7XXX graphics cards. The water cooler has been optimized, it says, to dissipate the enormous waste heat properties of this graphics card generation in the best possible way. The fin structure was developed together with AMD board partners and has been adjusted. The fin thickness of this generation of Eisblock (ice block) coolers is 0.4 mm, as is the distance between the cooling fins. Alphacool says both allow better water flow while increasing the cooling surface. The jet plate, a modified nozzle plate, has a revised inlay. That inlay distributes the water pressure better to the fins, which gives an optimal water distribution on them and optimizes heat absorption. The adjusted flow also helps the water to achieve a better inflow angle.

Chrome-plated copper

The base of the cooler is made entirely of chrome-plated copper. Alphacool says chrome plating is more resistant to acids, scratches and damage than nickel plating. So far, it says, chrome-plated coolers have only been used in the industrial sector, to cope with extreme influences on the cooler. In addition, Alphacool finds that chrome looks much more homogeneous and offers a shine that cannot be achieved with nickel.

Design and lighting

The Aurora design of this ice block generation is visually calmer and simpler: the cooler is enclosed by a single O-ring. The construction around the cooling fins and the jetplate ensures a clearer look. Fifteen digitally addressable RGB LEDs supply the lighting. Alphacool says their light is even better distributed in the cooler thanks to the chrome plating. The shape of the terminal corresponds to the classic Aurora design.

Thermal compound and thermal pads

Included is Alphacool's Subzero thermal compound, with a thermal conductivity of 16 W/mK. Alphacool ranks it as one of the highest performing thermal compounds on the market. The electrically non-conductive Thermal Grease is particularly well suited for high contact pressures. Thanks to its viscosity of 850,000 TF, Alphacool says, it can still be processed perfectly. Alphacool Soft Pads with a thickness of 1 mm are used for the voltage converters and the graphics memory, and they conduct 7 W/mK. The pads for the back of the PCB are 3 mm thick and conduct 3 W/mK.

What the loop needs

The block has four G1/4 threads. Two take the compression fittings for your tube size, which are not in the box, and the other two take the two plugs that are, along with a plug tool. The lighting has a 3-Pin JST power connector at 5V, and an ARGB adapter is included. A putty tool, screws, M2 nuts, EVA washers and the PCI bracket also come with the block.

Notes

  • Please note: use the block only in conjunction with clear transparent water cooling fluids. Alphacool warns that the particles and additives in Pastel liquids can clog and permanently damage water cooling products such as radiators, pumps, coolers and hoses. That can result in voiding the manufacturer's warranty as well.
  • Remove the original cooler on an antistatic mat and clean the card of thermal paste and pad residues before fitting the block.
