If you already assembled your gaming PCs yourself at the beginning of the 2000s, you may still remember the countless cases of defective CPUs à la AMD Athlon XP, whose silicon cores were broken off by incorrectly setting up the CPU cooler during assembly at the corners. In order to avoid such a high death rate of otherwise perfectly functioning processors, especially for less experienced users, a metal heatspreader was placed on the CPU package for subsequent CPU generations, starting with the AMD Athlon 64 and Intel Pentium III, to simplify the handling of the cooler assembly, which has since successfully protected the CPU die from damage.
This Integrated Heatspreader (IHS), which is mostly made of nickel-plated copper, forwards the waste heat of the chip to the CPU cooler and distributes the thermal energy generated during operation over a larger contact surface than that which the pure silicon itself would
provide. However, a thermal interface material (TIM) is located between heatspreader and silicon chip to connect both components, which intel has no longer made of soldering agent since the Ivy Bridge generation from 2012, but of a standard thermal compound, which also replaces the solder in all subsequent CPU series and thus severely hinders heat dissentancing and thus excessive overclocking due to its relatively low thermal conductivity.

package. So that such a CPU can be sufficiently cooled even with pronounced overclocking, courageous enthusiasts and extreme overclockers quickly separate the heatspreader with a sharp razor blade or similar utensils. However, the greatest caution is required and a lot of tact is required in order not to mutilate vital components for the CPU. Even for professional overclockers with a lot of experience, this radical method is not yet feasible without risk.

The Delid Die Mate 2, developed by benchmark grandmaster Roman "der8auer" Hartung for this reason and improved again in version 2, provides a remedy right here and allows anyone to remove the heatspreader easily, conveniently and safely themselves, without having to accept a premature demise of the CPU. The name of the processor guillotine made of sturdy, black anodized aluminum with laser-engraved der8auer logo can be freely translated into German as "Silicon core cover removal friend". With it, the heatspreader can be safely removed in less than a minute by inserting the processor to be headed into the recording module of the Delid Die Mate 2 according to the arrow marking on the CPU. Subsequently, a slide, which is responsible for the heads of the CPU, is inserted into the recording module and tightened slowly and evenly by means of a hexagonal screw, whereby the heatspreader completely detaches and is pushed by the processor. With this method, the heads succeed absolutely reliably and without any risk of damage.
The previously dangerous craft act thus becomes a harmless routine and the sensitive silicon die and above all the other, now exposed components of the CPU are guaranteed to remain
intact. Extreme overclockers and all those who want to become one, the device opens up completely new possibilities for professionally stimulation of their CPUs. The problematic additional heat transfer between heatspreader and silicon is now completely eliminated and the CPU temperature is consequently greatly lowered - even without any overclocking. Another advantage is that now a higher quality thermal paste with better conductivity can and must be chosen by yourself, for example from Thermal Grizzly. The results are impressive: Under load, 10 °C to 20 °C lower temperatures can be achieved.
A popular alternative for all other processor generations is also to replace the thermal interface material itself, e.B. with liquid metal thermal compound with significantly better thermal conductivity.
The heatspreader can then be reattached practically if necessary by means of silicone adhesive and all processor coolers can be mounted as usual. For a reliable connection between heatspreader and CPU, the third component of the Delid The Mate 2 is required, which is pushed over the recording module and exerts pressure from above in the vice process. However, it should also be noted that not too much pressure is exerted, otherwise the CPU could be damaged.
